Am I being Abused?

Does your partner:
  • Embarrass you with put-downs?
  • Look at you or act in ways that scare you?
  • Control what you do, who you see or talk to or where you go?
  • Stop you from seeing your friends or family members?
  • Take your money or Social Security check, make you ask for money or refuse to give you money?
  • Make all of the decisions?
  • Tell you that you’re a bad parent or threaten to take away or hurt your children?
  • Prevent you from working or attending school?
  • Act like the abuse is no big deal, it’s your fault, or even deny doing it?
  • Destroy your property or threaten to kill your pets?
  • Intimidate you with guns, knives or other weapons?
  • Shove you, slap you, choke you, or hit you?
  • Force you to try and drop charges?
  • Threaten to commit suicide?
  • Threaten to kill you?
If you answered ‘yes’ to even one of these questions,
you may be in an abusive relationship.

The “multisectoral programme for the fight against gender-based violence through the empowerment of women and girls in Morocco” aims to prevent and protect women and girls from all forms of violence by addressing the inter linkages between their state of poverty and their vulnerability.

The programme will be implemented through two strategic entry points: the mainstreaming of gender issues in national policies and the application of the gender-sensitive national policies in 6 identified regions through the establishment of multisectoral referral systems for the care of women and girls. Within this framework, the programme focuses on gender-sensitive planning, programming and budgeting processes, and the promotion of a culture of equality for the transformation of gender relations. The programme supports Morocco’s efforts in the promotion of the human rights of women and girls and falls within the scope of The National Initiative for Human Development (NIHD).

"Tamkine" means empowerment in Morocco, and this is the key strategy through which the multi-sectoral joint programme addresses violence against women. Taking a multi-sectoral approach, it joins together 13 national entities and over 50 NGOs. It aims to prevent and protect women and girls from all forms of violence by addressing the inter-linkages between poverty and vulnerability.

With programme support, women survivors of violence have greater access to legal, psychological, social and economic support. Since 2008, 4651 women have benefitted from the programme supported centres for women survivors of violence. The number of counseling centres has grown from 38 in 2008 to 52 in 2010. One example is the multifunctional centre in Fes, where women find a safe space for themselves and their children, and are able to develop livelihood skills in confectionery, goldsmith's art, cookery, etc.
